The Performance of Your Life
Knowing the proper behavior on stage is critical to giving your best live performance. With that in mind, try to follow these tips:
The Practice Run
Rehearse with the band. A minimum of one dress rehearsal should be carried out prior to taking the stage. Don’t read the lyrics on your last dress rehearsal, sing everything from memory.
Outfit Selection
Make sure you choose a good outfit, because this can determine the outcome of your show. When you choose an outfit, make sure that you wear it during rehearsals so that you get used to it. You want to be sure that you can move in it and breathe without feeling constricted.
Walking out onto the stage
Figure out where to stand on the stage, and then practice walking to that spot. Knowing how to walk across a stage and land in place isn’t as easy as it sounds. You want to stop in place but also find your posture as you stop. Find your alignment, walk across the room and maintain that posture.
Keep the speaker turned away from you
Singing with a band can be really cool, but the first time can be a bit confusing. If the speakers are pointed away from you, which they probably will be, you may have trouble hearing yourself. Ask if it’s possible to have a speaker turned toward you. Remember that bands often play pretty loud, and turning the speaker towards yourself can be distracting if you have a huge wall of sound coming at you. If a specific instrument plays the melody line, you may have to get used to picking out that sound from the other instruments.
Smile
Make sure you smile as you go on stage. Even if you are nervous, a smile, will make you appear more confident. Your smile needs to look genuine even if you’re nervous and don’t want to be on the stage.
Acknowledgment of the audience
When you are singing, you might not know when it’s time to pay attention to the audience. As a singer, you will perform in many different places, and not all of them will be small. To get a feel for whether to include the audience as part of your song, watch and learn from the seasoned pros.
Be prepared for distractions
In a normal concert there can be a lot of distractions. People cough, enter late and even leave right in the middle of your song. People in the audience often don’t consider how this distracts the performer. When you practice at home you might want to intentionally stage some distractions. Get a friend to try and distract you while you practice ignoring them and concentrating on your performance.
Watch those hands
Make sure you don’t do anything strange with your hands while you are performing; keep them at your sides if you can. Though your sides might not seem like a great place, it is at least a safe place. If you gesture, then make a complete gesture, because anything incomplete or half done will make you look nervous. If you need another option, then you can clasp your hands to the front of you.
Great so now you’ve got a good idea of how to behave on the big night. In order to wow your audience you’ll need to work hard to perfect your singing skills. You can either take private singing lessons or use a professional home-study singing course like Sing With Freedom.
