Incidentally, Louis Jacques Daguerre was Joseph Nicphore Nipce’s partner, but he died before their invention could take any sort of commercially successful form. Therefore, it was Daguerre who became famous for the invention that became the first practical way to take a photograph, named the daguerreotype. The 19th-century studio camera became the first truly commercially available way to take a photograph, most especially with the invention of the gelatine dry plate in 1871. Richard Leach Maddox invented these, and they were superior to what place both in quality and speed. It was at this time the cameras were first made small enough that they could be concealed or held in the hand.

Faster processing also meant candid photography was possible; because of this, short exposure times were necessary, which made the invention of the mechanical shutter necessary. By the turn of the century, built-in shutters were commonplace.

George Eastman began to manufacture paper film for photographs in 1885, and then switched to celluloid. The first camera he manufactured was called the Kodak, first available for sale in 1888. Its low price and simple function meant that it was easily accessible to the average consumer. These first cameras had film 100 exposures included; upon completion of a roll of film, the entire camera was sent back to the factory for processing.

Eastman’s next major invention was in 1900, with the Brownie. This simple, inexpensive box camera was the first that really took a “snapshot”. It was so popular, in fact, that models of the Brownie were not entirely removed from commercial sale until the 1960s.

Movie camera inventions also were not left behind. With film came the ability to make relatively inexpensive films, which made them popular as well for commercial film ventures. Although George Eastman certainly opened up photography to the average consumer, plate cameras made higher quality prints and state popular in certain sectors for decades into the 20th century. Kodak itself got into the market with 35mm film in 1938 with the Retina I.

Instant cameras were another new incarnation of the consumer market, with the first appearing on the market in 1948. It was known as a Land Camera, named after its inventor, Edwin Land. Polaroid produced dozens of models by the 1960s. The first Polaroid camera on the popular market was the Model 20 Swinger, which remains a top seller.

Digital cameras changed the process of picture taking because they don’t use film but instead capture photographs on internal storage devices or digital memory cards. This makes it much easier to produce pictures, and is much less costly to own and operate than film cameras are. Today, for example, consumers are increasingly offered the ability to take pictures on mobile phones and share them quickly. All of this does not of course remove the need for permanence and elegance that canvas prints or a personalised calendar can provide. Chicago is a Kander and Ebb musical set in prohibition era Chicago. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice, and the concept of the celebrity criminal. The musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about real-life criminals and crimes she had reported on. Two of the main real-life characters are Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner: Annan, the model for the character of Roxie Hart, was 23 when she was accused of the murder of Harry Kalstedt.

The Tribune claimed that Annan played the foxtrot record Hula Lou again and again for 2 hours before getting to phoning her husband to state she killed a man who “tried to make love to her.” She was found “not guilty” on May 25th, 1924. Velma is based on Gaertner, who was a cabaret singer. The body of Walter Law was discovered slumped on the steering wheel of Gaertner’s abandoned car on March 12th, 1924. Two law enforcement officers testified that they had seen a lady getting into the car and shortly thereafter heard the sound of gunshots. A bottle of gin and an automatic gun were found on the floor within the vehicle. Gaertner was acquitted on June 6th, 1924 The two lawyers, William Scott Stewart and W. W. O’Brien, were models for a amalgamated figure in Chicago, Billy Flynn.

The show opens with Velma Kelly, who is a vaudevillian who murdered both her husband and her sister when she found the pair of them in bed together. She welcomes the guests to tonight’s show (“All That Jazz”). Meanwhile, we hear of chorus girl Roxie Hart’s homicide of her lover, nightclub regular Fred Casely.

Roxie is caught and is sent to the women’s block in Cook County Jail, inhabited by Velma along with other murderesses. The block is presided over by the corrupt Matron Mama Morton, who has helped Velma get to be the media’s top murder of the week and is acting as a booking agent for Velma’s big come back to vaudeville. Velma just isn’t very happy to see Roxie, who is stealing not just her spotlight but her lawyer, Billy Flynn. The show continues and is a great must see show.

Brief history of the Cambridge Theatre: The Cambridge Theatre is a West End theatre, on a corner site in Earlham Street facing Seven Dials, in the London Borough of Camden, built in 1929-30. It was designed by Wimperis, Simpson and Guthrie; interior partly by Serge Chermayeff (an interior designer with the firm of Waring & Gillow), with interior bronze friezes by sculptor Anthony Gibbons Grinling. The theatre was built for Bertie Meyer. The theatre is built in steel and concrete and is notable for its elegant design. The theatre was refurbished during 1950 with the original gold and silver decor being painted over in red, and candelabras and chandeliers being added. In 1987, in order to restore the original dcor, the theatre was once again refurbished, this time by Carl Toms. The theatre has a circular entrance foyer, with Grinling’s bronze frieze depicting nude figures in exercise poses, the theme continues into the main foyer, with dancing nudes, marble pilaster uplighters and concealed lighting.
